Composition in Ten Genres

This writing piece is probably one of my favorite writing genres I have wrote. This writing piece is called “The Man Who Couldn’t Let Go“.

The “Man Who Couldn’t Let Go” is about a man who just broke up with
his girlfriend because of the girlfriend’s parents’ strict rules, forcing her to
cut the relationship and continue her education. The man promises himself
to wait for her and win her back. However, the man feels the worst of the
heartbreak but holds on to the glimmer of hope that she comes back. But as
time goes on, this glimmer of hope ends being a matter of coping with his
heartbreak. After months of cope, the man accepts the fact that his ex-
girlfriend won’t be going back to him and for his own good, he decides to
move on with his life remembering the special moments they had together.

Drafting the idea: At first, I was confused and stumped because I
really didn’t know what to write. Until I heard some ideas from my
classmates saying they wrote some deep topics, and I decided to write
something deep as well. I decided on a topic where people could feel
empathic or understanding towards the main character (which was
heartbreak and letting go).

Writing: At one point, I had to reset because I felt like some of the
dialogue or writing was way too corny and didn’t seem deep at all. I didn’t
want to make it sound like it came from a movie. I wanted it to sound real.
Rewriting: After a minor setback, I finally wrote a piece on what felt
“real”. And I decided to write the story using time periods of what the main
character was thinking at the time because writing everything that happened
would be too much or too long. Writing the thought process in time periods
would be shorter but also tell a story.

Peer Share / Read: At the time, I didn’t really share or read my
writing piece to anyone mostly because I didn’t finish or had nothing to show.
Public Reading: I didn’t present my writing piece (even though I
could’ve improvised) because I felt like it needed to be checked over and I
didn’t exactly make a final draft for it at the time.

After finishing the writing piece, it felt satisfying knowing that I finished
a long project. But it was also fun making a story (especially a deep one) and
coming up with ways on how to connect the readers with the character. At
first, it was hard to come up with topics and ideas but with inspiration with
my classmates, I was able to write this story.
